The Brief

The brief called for a bespoke joinery and metalwork package that referenced the Tower’s medieval character, using materials and detailing that conveyed strength, craftsmanship, and heritage.

All elements had to be designed within strict conservation constraints, ensuring that the historic fabric of the building remained completely untouched.

The scheme therefore needed to balance modern retail functionality with a historically sympathetic design language, delivering durable, atmospheric displays that complemented the surrounding architecture.

The Result

The completed scheme delivers a refined retail environment that respects the historic significance of the White Tower while meeting the practical demands of a modern gift shop.

Rich smoked oak joinery is layered with contrasting metals, including blackened steel, aged brass, and stainless steel, creating depth, texture, and subtle references to the Tower’s medieval past.

Carefully engineered display units provide both structural support and integrated lighting, ensuring modern functionality without altering the historic building fabric. The patinated metal finishes blend seamlessly with the timber elements, producing a cohesive and atmospheric interior.

The result is a contemporary interpretation of medieval design, retail spaces that serve today’s visitors while reflecting the enduring strength, craftsmanship, and heritage of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.
